| HELPING CLIENTS TO OPTIMIZE THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCY | ||
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) account for nearly 2% of global CO2 emissions— as much as the aviation industry according to Gartner. Making the situation all the more urgent, greenhouse gas emissions from information systems are expected to increase by 50% by 2020 if data centers continue to grow at their current pace.
ICT can clearly contribute to reducing the carbon footprint generated by other sectors ICT are today an important part of the European economy and could thus impact positively on the environment and therefore help to combat climate change according to a recent report of the European Commission, which also encourages the growing use of ICT for a greener Europe. The report also states that the use of technologies should contribute to reducing up to 15% CO2 emissions in Europe by 2020.
An active commitment to preserving the environment
More than half of Atos’s greenhouse gas emissions come from its 50 data centers, which host tens of thousands of servers. To reduce its environmental impact, Atos has defined a global program "Data Center Energy Optimization" that aims at deploying the best practices and enabling to anticipate the European directives on Data Centers. Since 2009 Atos has also been actively committed to adhere to the European Code of Conduct on Data Centers energy efficiency. Aiming at reducing its carbon footprint and its main data centers PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness), Atos Worldline has implemented Green IT policy that covers major programs such as dematerialization, grid solutions, suitable equipments or free chilling.
Accompanying clients in their green IT and sustainable development projects
Atos Worldline brings together Atos’s core expertise in high-tech transactional services. This expertise leads to the dematerialization of worldwide exchanges and contributes to a global environmental protection effort. We extend this sustainable approach to the functioning of the whole company through objectives pertaining to the people, profit and planet.
Atos Worldline implements innovative projects such as:
» In June 2008, the UK's Royal Society of Arts (RSA), launched a pilot to enable real-time personal carbon calculation and leveraged technology already in place at Atos to process British Petroleum (BP) service station loyalty cards.
» In the transportation sector Air France passengers have been using our paperless boarding card solution since September 4, 2008. As for rail, all Thalys International passengers can now travel paper-free to all destinations and receive traffic updates via e-mail or SMS thanks to the extension of the Ticketless service, previously available only to loyalty program members.
» In a project for ERDF, for example, our technology will be used to deploy 35 million smart meters that can be read remotely, without a technician's visit. New “smart meters” are able to transmit and receive data for remote reading and optimized network management. Installing millions of these new meters is in itself a massive undertaking that will also generate huge volume of data to be transmitted, stored and processed.
